Re-think Your Drink…

Just because summer is over, doesn’t mean you have to stop hydrating! Like most things, water is not created equal. After a recent water testing was completed by a local trainer, and a deep conversation with a good friend was had; I decided to do a little digging and uncover which brands are good for you and which brands to ditch. We all know, or hopefully know, the importance of drinking water. It is great for keeping you hydrated and flushing the toxins out of your body.

Most of the water sold in stores contains fluoride, commonly believed to aid in dental health. After conducting studies, scientists have found this not to be the case. Fluoride actually causes more damage than good to your teeth. Over time, fluoride causes tooth decay, erosion of your gums, malformation and other diseases.

Alkaline, folks. Alkaline water is the best water for us to consume and will provide our bodies with the electrolytes and minerals that we need. These are the brands that you will definitely want to stay away from…some of them just might shock you.

Alhambra, Sierra Springs, Sparkletts, Arrowhead, Mount Olympus, Belmont Springs, Poland Spring, Crystal Rock, Crystal Springs, Shenandoah, Deer Park, Diamond Springs, Nursery Water, Hindley Spri, Ice Mountain, Kandiyohi, Puritan Springs, Kentwood Springs, Mayer Bros., Ozarka, Pure Flo, and Zephyrhills.

You can purchase alkaline water or purchase machines like this one that will produce alkaline water right in your own home! There you have it! Fill your body with only the good stuff. Getting healthy, one drink at a time…

What Men Really Think About Makeup…

Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 7.22.52 AM

Today’s post is at the request of, Katie, a lovely subscriber of mine. After writing, “What Guys Really Think About Your Hair”, Katie sent in an email asking me to write about what guys think of makeup. I thought this would be super fun, so here it goes…

Ahh, yes. Today I am tackling the age old question, “What men really think about makeup.” As women, we spend a lot of our time and money making ourselves look good. Not all women, but some. We put a ton of emphasis on what we will do with our hair today. What kind of clothes we are going to wear today. What kind of products we will put on our lovely faces today. I mean seriously, we do a lot. Some, if not most of the women I know or whom I’ve talked to, will tell you that it’s all for themselves. Others will say it’s for men or the man they are with. Personally, I like to look good for myself. If others happened to be pleased with my appearance, it’s an added bonus. Who doesn’t want people to think they look nice?

Recently, my skin has been taking a turn for the better *see previous skin care/regimen posts* and I have a fresh-off vacation tan…

…So, I have been sans makeup for the last 3 weeks or so. Typically, I am a woman who wears makeup and I don’t think there is a thing wrong with doing so. I don’t wear a lot, mostly foundation/blush/mascara. Here and there, the occasional pop of color on the lippies…

See? Not a ton, I am more of the “Barefaced” look as the MUAs *makeup artists* would tell you. I save the “heavier” stuff for photoshoots or special occasions.

Getting back to the point at hand here… I recently started seeing this guy that I met on Match. Yes, Match. He is an amazing catch thus far *fingers crossed*, but one of the things that I really like about him, he thinks I am absolutely gorgeous without a stitch of makeup on. Major kudos to guys like him 😉

So, how do men really view women and makeup? Well, there are obviously all different opinions, but after doing some research and talking to my male buddies, I found that mostly, guys don’t like the stuff.

I know, right?! All this time, money and effort and they don’t even give a shit. Who would have thought?! But then when asked who their celebrity crush is, they’ll tell you someone like Kim Kardashian or Beyonce, or Giselle or Kate Upton. All of which wear TONS of makeup. So, which is it guys!?

It seems that they are “celeb crushes” for a reason. They are people they think are pretty, but they know are mostly fake. They are women they like to look at or perhaps fantasize about, but wouldn’t be interested in actually being with them. Turns out, most of the men I spoke to chose a bare faced or nearly bare faced woman over pictures of women with a lot of makeup on.

“I want the real thing” said one guy. Another stated that, “I don’t want to wake up to someone different than who I saw out on the street.” Another guy said, which I thought was hysterical, “I hate when that stuff rubs off on my clothes.” *Insert major laughing emoji here*

When I presented the guys with pictures of super made up women, the response was overwhelmingly negative. They stated that when they see women like this, they want to run. They felt, in a way, that they were being lied to. That there is no way that this is what this woman looks like without the makeup (or “stuff” as they kept putting it.) Some of the guys also noted that the women wearing a lot of makeup came across as high maintenance, which is code for “run for the hills.”

It would seem that the prize would go to the women who wear little to no makeup, or stuff. Now, listen… I am by no means suggesting that people who love wearing makeup, whether a little or a lot, should stop because this is what a good amount of men seem to like. Ultimately, we all need to do what makes us happy. This is merely a fun post that I thought would be interesting. For all of you who may be fired up, please relax.

I think Marilyn Monroe said it best…

||Thank you to the men who participated in my survey. You all were very helpful and quite funny||

Swear Your Way to a Higher I.Q …

I thought today’s blog post was a pretty interesting one. It turns out that people who swear/curse often may be smarter and have a higher verbal intelligence. Dropping F–bombs doesn’t mean you have a bad vocabulary after all.

Now don’t get me wrong, I believe curse words have their time and place. You certainly don’t want to go parading around cursing people out and using such words around children or certain family members, but using them doesn’t make you any less of a person than someone who doesn’t use them.

Don’t you hate it when you miss your f—ing train, or when your friend acts like a complete a–hole at a party? How about when you lose your keys — ain’t that a b–ch? Hearing someone use swear words may bother you, or even suggest to you that they’re less verbally intelligent. If that’s the case, however, then you may be surprised by the results of a new study published in Language Sciences. According to the research, a lack of verbal fluency has nothing to do with how often people use profanity.

Dr. Timothy Jay, of the Department of Psychology at Massachusetts College Of Liberal Arts and author of the study, wanted to dispel the idea that people who swear do so because they have a bad vocabulary. He cited one study that found people who used profanity were rated lower in terms of socio-intellectual status than people who were more restrained. “It’s part of your emotional intelligence to know how and when to use these words. If you’re thinking about it from a moral perspective, you’re missing how common and normal it is. Everybody knows this language,” he said.

In Jay’s study, being fluent in “taboo” words was positively associated with other measures of verbal fluency, debunking the common myth about taboo words. “People who use taboo words understand their expressive nature and nuanced distinctions, implying the presence of more apt linguistic skill.” Not to mention other studies have found swear words can double as a pain reliever.

I don’t know about you, but a curse word or two…mmm or three or four just seems necessary at times. Actually, I like to think of them as sentence enhancers. Come onnnnn, we all do it! Now we can feel a little bit better now knowing that it actually makes us smarter as a people!

No? Still not buying it? Well that’s fine. Not everyone is into cursing and that’s totally fine! Don’t worry, you’re still smart. Trust me, I wrote this post knowing it wouldn’t resonate with everyone, especially most moms and dads of the world. *cough, cough* But hey, maybe now we can stop with the potty mouth/soap jokes?

Because really, us “swear-word-users” are pretty darn smart 😉

Can You See Us?

Can you see me? I’m just a boy who was walking home from the convenient store near my neighborhood with skittles and iced tea one night and shot dead…

Can you see me? I’m a young child who was playing with a toy gun on the playground one day and never went home to mommy…

Can you see me? I’m a 28 year old woman who was dragged out of my car for failure to extinguish my cigarette during a routine traffic stop, then found dead three days later in my jail cell…

Can you see me? Can you hear me? I can’t breathe…A grown man, crying out for air as I take in my last breath?…

Can you see me? I’m a 25 year old man who was arrested for possessing an alleged illegal switchblade, later to die from injuries suffered after a car ride in a police vehicle…

Can you see me? I am a man who was selling cd’s outside of a store, was tackled to the ground by police, then shot four times…

Can you see me? I am a man who was driving with my girlfriend and six year old daughter. I was pulled over by police for an alleged broken tail light. I was shot multiple times for reaching for my identification, at the officer’s request. This was just 24 hours after the man above me was killed…

Today, I heard a story about Philando Castile. He was a 32 year old Black man, with a six year old daughter and girlfriend. He died yesterday. Yesterday was the last day he would ever see his daughter, his girlfriend, his friends, his family, his colleagues, etc. I can’t even tell you how my heart broke today when a co-worker shared the video that has now gone viral of the officer shooting Philando at point-blank range. I literally started to tear up and had to excuse myself from my desk.

It’s funny though, when I turn on the news, it seems that there is more of a fascination with Donald Trump’s latest tweet, or Hillary Clinton’s advance in the polls. Why am I finding out about Alton Sterling and Philando Castile via Facebook, Instagram, or friends? Are we really living in a time where the lives of a human take the back seat to an orange- faced clown with really bad hair? Take a back seat to the next campaign rally? Take a back seat to the premier of a new show? Why are we, and by we I mean everyone, not just Black people…why are we not more enraged by this?

When is enough going to be enough? After a Minnesota police officer shot and killed Philando Castile on Wednesday evening, Castile became the 559th person killed by police in 2016 alone. 559TH PERSON TO BE KILLED BY THE POLICE IN 2016. Yes, I reiterated and used all caps for a reason. Is it not problematic that in just under 7 months, that many lives have been lost at the hands of the police? A police officer is one who is put in place to serve and protect. How are we to to put our trust in people who keep killing us?

In a quote from President Obama today, he stated, “To admit we’ve got a serious problem in no way contradicts our respect and appreciation for the vast majority of police officers who put their lives on the line to protect us every single day. It is to say that, as a nation, we can and must do better to institute the best practices that reduce the appearance or reality of racial bias in law enforcement.”

While I have great respect for President Obama, I must disagree with part of his statement. It is not that we need to reduce the appearance in racial bias in law enforcement. We need to reduce racial bias as a whole. There is no appearance, there flat out IS racial bias within every area of law enforcement.

If an officer is easily threatened and scared of people in general, here’s a tip, DON’T BE AN EFFING COP! You can’t just go around killing people because “you feared for your life”. Grow a pair, seriously. If you feel easily threatened by a certain race, maybe you should switch your station, area, district, whatever you want to call it. Go work in a mall, or a library, or somewhere a little more tame for you. The use of guns by officers has really reached a point of absurdity. Shoot first, ask later. We live in a day and age where everything is caught on cellphones, and yet and still officers are blatantly using unnecessary force! Why?!

This post is in no way written to cause controversy or division. It’s more of a sad note that I felt compelled to write. My heart breaks for these families who have lost loved ones over senseless acts by the hands of this nation’s police force. So no, this isn’t just another piece written by a blogger who is trying to jump on the band wagon. I am not jumping on the #BlackLivesMatter campaign because it is the perfect timing for it. I am sad. I am mad. I am so deeply concerned for the state of our country. The land of the free… for some…

For those of you who are ready to do something about this, I strongly suggest finding a rally/protest to take part in. Make your voice heard. Change is needed and we can be that change.

For others who are not as interested in rallying, as it is not for everyone, I suggest making your voice heard in other ways. Perhaps, sign a petition (find information below.) The Castile family has set up a GoFundMe account. You can help his family in their great time of need. It’s a way to show your condolences and make your voice heard as well. Please click here to do so.

This petition is addressed to President Obama and the Department of Justice, and it calls for action against police brutality. “We are humans with beating hearts that are bleeding from the treatment of our ancestors and relatives TODAY,” writes Shanice Stewart, who started the petition. “We want Justice for Mr. Sterling, as well as the PAST AND FUTURE Mr. Sterlings!” Click here to sign the petition. it currently has 677 signatures.

This petition demands that the Department of Justice immediately “charge and arrest the two officers who murdered Alton Sterling in cold blood.” The petition names the two officers and describes in detail the nature of Sterling’s death. The petition currently has 15,138 supporters, and is aiming for 16,000. Click here to sign the petition.

This petition, which targets the Department of Justice, lives on the White House website, and only has 79 of the required 100,000 signatures so far. The petition’s aim is clear: “We the People demand a swift and just investigation into this case and for charges to ultimately be filed.” Click here to sign the petition.

This petition requests a fully documented, nonpartisan, ethical, and thorough investigation of the Philando Castile case. This petition also requests the action of the United States Department of Justice to indict the involved police officer, as well as fight for a conviction. The public is demanding justice for Philando, change in our law enforcement system, and the end of police brutality. This petition has 367 signatures of the 500 needed. Click here to sign the petition.

Today’s post is very real. I sit here now at my laptop with tears in my eyes and a deep hurt in my heart. I sincerely hope that you will do your part in trying to save humanity with me.

If we stand for nothing, we will fall for anything.”
