Hot Flashes be Gone!

10.06.15Miscellaneous0

  • Today’s post was requested by Sharon, a lovely subscriber to the blog. She had asked me to do a post for remedies for hot flashes. While I must admit, I’m only 26 and not even close to experiencing that part of life just yet, I did a little digging and found some pretty cool *no pun intended* solutions for all of my subscribers currently going through the struggle.

What are hot flashes anyway?

No, no…well, while I am more than sure it might feel like a test from the one above, it’s actually not. If anything, it’s because stupid Eve ate from the tree that doomed all of humanity, but I digress and will save that one for a later post. There are non-menopausal heat flashes (unrelated to going through menopause) and then there are hot flashes that are brought on by menopause. A hot flash is a quick feeling of heat and sometimes a red, flushed face and sweating. The exact cause of hot flashes is unknown, but may be related to changes in circulation. Hot flashes happen when the blood vessels near the skin’s surface dilate to cool. Hot flashes will vary in length of time, for some it is brief, while others experience for quite some time. Even disrupting their sleep and every day activities. So sit tight and be prepared to fight off those nasty hot flashes! *Dun, dun, dunnnn*

::How to Beat the Heat::

1.Black Cohosh

Black Cohosh is a plant used widely in Europe for treating menopause and hot flashes. Studies show Black Cohosh to be just as effective as pharmaceutical estrogen in providing hot flash relief and one study showed Black Cohosh was effective at preventing excessive sweating.

2. Flaxseed Oil

Fatty acids, such as those found in flaxseed oil, have been thought to be effective in reducing menopausal symptoms. Flax contains plant lignans which are similar to estrogen, possibly causing estrogen levels to stabilize in menopausal women.

3. Evening Primrose Oil

A general tonic for women’s reproductive health, evening primrose has a cooling effect on the skin and regulates the production of estrogen. It can act as a sleep aid due to its high gamma linolenic acid count, and increased prostaglandin production. *This one is really good for women who suffer from hot flashes that cause insomnia*

4. Chickweed Tincture

Daily servings of this herb have been reported to lower both the number and severity of hot flashes.

5. Red Clover

A plant containing high amounts of phyto-estrogens known as isoflavones has been shown to help reduce the intensity and frequency of hot flashes.

6. Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic treatment options such as Ferrum phosphoricum (good for reducing redness), Belladonna (an excellent herb for sporadic, rapid hot flashes), Sanguinarina (counteracts hot flashes on the face, neck and ears) and Kali Phosphoricum.

7. Vitamin C & E

Some women have found that bioflavanoids found in Vitamin C can help reduce the frequency of hot flashes. In order to get hot flash relief, eat more foods with vitamin C. Studies have shown that antioxidants in Vitamin E play a significant role in reducing the symptoms of hot flashes.  In order to get hot flash relief, take the suggested serving of a Vitamin E supplement or eat more foods with vitamin E.

8. Miscellaneous Tips:

-Avoid synthetic bedding and clothing

-Stop smoking

-Take time to unwind/De-stress

-Stay away from trigger substances: Alcohol, fried foods, spicy foods, caffeine, diet pills and very hot (temperature-wise) foods can create increased acid and heat in the body. It is best to avoid these substances, especially foods that cause acid reflux.

-Regular exercise

-Cleanse your body: By cleansing your body on a regular basis you can help balance your organs and hormone levels. Do a liver and colon cleanse at least twice a year!

There you have it! Some quick and easy life hacks for hot flashes! I hope this helps you Sharon and all of my other amazing subscribers/followers. Here’s to staying nice and cool!
